Principal Heather Patterson and Athletic Director Jennifer Burks told the Varsity Football team that their Head Coach Joseph Ortiz had resigned. Coach Joseph Ortiz coached for Cactus High’s football team from 2018 to 2022. During the 2021-2022 season as the Cobras head coach, Ortiz led them to the Open State Championship, ultimately going 10-0 (W/L) in the regular season, losing in the first round of playoffs to Saguaro Highschool.
Ortiz has been with the Gilbert Highschool Perry Pumas from 2022-2026. With their best record being 8-4, during the 2023-2024 season. During the season of 2025-2026, Ortiz went 5-5 in the regular season, and 1-1 in the postseason; losing in the second round to ALA Queen Creek. Ortiz put together an ultimate coaching staff in the 24-25 season with notable names like Adam Snyder; a 10 year veteran in the NFL, and Kyle Williams; a 6 year veteran in the NFL. This would once again lead the Pumas to a 6-6 season. Ortiz has had one winning season out of 4 during his time at Perry High School, ultimately going 24-23 during his tenure as a Puma.
